The origin of Butai Pass
Crossing the border between Hida and Mino provinces and entering Gero town, you arrive at Butai Pass. The origin of this elegant place name dates back 800 years to when Minamoto no Yoriie,
of the Kamakura shogunate, visited the Hōjiozan Daiitoku-ji Temple (an archaeological site and Gifu Prefecture historical site), which was built by order of Minamoto no Yoritomo,
the shogun of the Kamakura shogunate.
To alleviate the boredom of the various daimyo who were visiting the temple, Yoriie built a stage on this pass and
gathered beautiful shirabyoshi (female dancers) from the capital to perform Noh theater, which is how the pass
came to be called Butai Pass (Stage Pass).
